Layer Import

Manually created street networks, parcels, footprints or even building volumes can be imported into the CityEngine for further refinement.

Importing Street Networks

The CityEngine support the import of street networks in the following two formats:

  • Street networks can be created in any application such as AutoCAD(TM) or Illustrator(TM) and imported into the CityEngine via the well-known .DXF file format.
  • Via OpenStreetMap, real existing street networks can be imported directly into the CityEngine via the .OSM file format.

The latter allows for an extremely efficient reconstruction of existing urban surroundings. The following tutorial highlights the OpenStreetMap import:

Importing Parcels, Lots and Volumes

The figure shows a an example of a possible CityEngine production pipeline. A similar pipeline was used to create the Rome Reborn model. There, the crude building volumes have been imported into the CityEngine and then the shape grammar has been applied to generate detailed building models.

Import File Format Overview

In the following the supported file formats are shortly described.

Format

Features

DXF

Imports street networks created manually in tools such as AutoCAD(R) as CityEngine street graph layer(s).

OSM

Imports real existing street networks exported from the OpenStreetMap site.

OBJ

Imports meshes created manually in tools such as MAX(R) as initial shape layers, for example footprints or mass models (volumes). Each group in the OBJ file is interpreted as one initial shape. A group can consist of one or several polygons. The group name (without suffix) is also used as ShapeSymbol that invokes a similar named rule.
