Creating a City from Pre-Modeled Assets

The Instance City Examples Project contains two scenes that apply rules to instance pre-modeled building assets. The assets used in this example differ in size and one of the main challenges was to correctly place assets on appropriate parcels. In this case, the provided instancing rules place small assets on smaller parcels, and bigger assets on large parcels while maintaining the original scale. In addition, assets are properly aligned to the parcels’ orientations. The Figure below shows the collection of the pre-modeled assets:

The example comes in two variants: The first scene is located on ground and based on a street-network and parcels generated with the CityEngine:

The second scene is located in 3D space based on a sub-division surface modeled in Maya and imported into the CityEngine:

Generating the science fiction city only takes a few seconds:

The models of this example were imported via the Collada format into Cinema4D, from where the following rendered frames result:

How to Download the Example

1. Start the CityEngine (Trial or Full Version)

2. Select Help → Download Tutorials and Examples... from the Menu

3. Mark the example you want to download and press Finish
4. The example project is downloaded into your current workspace
