New York City 2259

Note: This example project can be downloaded after the trial or full version of the CityEngine is installed (see below for instructions).

Features

NYC 2259 is the extrapolation of New York city 250 years into the future, inspired by the great 1997 motion picture The Fifth Element. The downloadable example includes grammar rules to create futuristic skyscrapers in two levels of detail as well as flying cars.

Today's street network of NYC, imported from OpenStreetMap, has been extended to a bigger area, available due to the lower water levels in the future. The picture on the left shows the todays street network and the one the right the street network 250 years later (created in 10 minutes with the procedural street network generation tools of the CityEngine).

The general building design highlights the huge protruding building sections as in the original movie. Therefore, the parcel is extruded, split vertically into two parts and then the front part is horizontally split into sections (with a recursive rule). The fantastic thing is that these rules can be applied also to arbitrary shapes, not only extrusions. Hence, at the very beginning of the rule set, simple polygonal volumes are inserted as a 'building envelope' and the remaining rules act as it would be an extrusion. These volumes can be explored in the folder /assets/volumes of the example project. The following picture illustrates the concept (the bottom row shows the inserted volumes).

The building rule features three levels of detail. Per default, the all levels of detail are activated according to the bookmarked camera view. It is highly recommended to explore the buildings in high level of detail. To activate high level of detail, select a few blocks of initial shapes (not all as long as you are not working with a 64bit version) and set the attribute LOD to 2 in the inspector window - then (re-)generate the building. Cool, isn't it?

The example furthermore contains a very simple rule file to distribute flying cars (the provided textured low-poly cars can be explored in the corresponding asset folder). To create the cars, (1) select a bunch of street segments from the street graph, (2) create initial street shapes, (3) assign the rule "flyingcars.cga" to them, and finally (4) press generate. The picture below shows the street shapes with the generated flying cars atop.
