What's New In CityEngine 2009.3

The CityEngine 2009.3 comes with important new features such as advanced roof types and global texture mapping to make the creation of large urban 3D models even easier. In addition, the CityEngine 2009.3 provides significant improvements to further enhance user experience, performance, and stability.

New Resources

Learning Materials - The CityEngine 2009.3 comes with more advanced learning resources including a new texture mapping tutorial and additional templates.

Example Projects - Two new example projects are provided with the CityEngine 2009.3. A procedural reconstruction of the ancient Pompeii and an astonishing Sci-Fi city in space:


User Interface

City Wizard - Use the new City Wizard to create and generate whole cities from pre-defined templates with only a few mouse clicks - such as the city below:

Scene Editor - Use the enhanced search function to quickly identify your objects in question. Better visibility control and selection sets improve your workflow.

Inspector - Adjust parameters faster with the new slider GUI and get results immediately. Practical visual feedback highlights the attribute source settings.

Immediate Mode - Use the new “single object” immediate mode to explore the design space of your models in real-time. Use the improved “full” immediate mode to adjust a whole set of objects in your scene.


3D Navigation

Navigation Schemes - Use pre-defined mouse navigation and keyboard schemes from your favorite 3D application within the CityEngine. Freely adjust the mouse navigation and key settings to your needs.

Navigation Tools - Apply the new explicit navigation tools for easy, modifier-less navigation within your scene.

3D Mouse Support - Use 3Dconnexion 3D mice for faster and more intuitive navigation within your scene.


Roof Modeling

New Roof Types - Use new roof types such as shed roofs for increased realism of your city.

New Roof Parameters - Apply new parameters to add roof details such as overhang for the simple parameterization of your model.

Concave Polygon Support - Generate roofs of any type on complex, concave shapes reliably.

CGA Shape Grammar

Global Texture Projection - Apply global texture projection for mapping of large textures across your scene to e.g. easily texture your GIS data sets.

Inner Rectangle Operation - Reliably determine a optimal inner rectangle on polygons to enable powerful instancing capabilities as in the new example project to download.

Component Split and Extrude Operation - Unify the selectors of the upgraded component split and e.g. reuse the union as a single shape in the advanced extrude operation. Use indices for increased context-sensitivity.

Occlusion - The occlusion queries now allow to check specifically for inter (neighboring buildings) and intra (own building structure) occlusion. Improvements of the underlying occlusion algorithms provide higher accuracy.

CGA Version Reference - Use the new CGA version reference to quickly identify the advancements of the CGA language.

Euler Angles - Apply Euler Angles more reliably due to improved numerical stability.

Offset Operation - Apply positive and negative polygon offset, and use decomposed inner and outer parts separately.


Street and Shape Tools

Grow Streets - Use the improved quarter subdivision to create better street networks.

Cleanup Streets - Cleanup your street networks more reliably with the improved segment and note intersection mechanisms.

Create Shapes - Reliably create initial shapes from complex street networks with many short segments.

New and Improved Tools - Use the new shape split tool to subdivide initial shapes manually. Use the improved graph and shape edit tools to edit objects more quickly and accurately. Streets with attributes are retained or correctly modified for most editing operations. 


Import / Export

Shapefile and OpenStreetMap - More powerful shapefile import due to improved handling of first edges and shape orientations, and better cleanup of OSM data.

3D Export Performance - Speed up your exports and use less memory with the highly improved export engine (a.o. fixes the 'ungenerated-models slow-down').
