To create the model consisting of more than 115,000 buildings, CityEngine was used.

CityEngine was operated by GFX artist Sam Calabrese: "The CityEngine workflow using real-world street data from OpenStreetMap.org worked great. [...] The rule-based system of CityEngine allows a great deal of flexibility when we need to adjust the mix/type of buildings generated in a given area, especially on tight television schedules. I can’t imagine doing this show without it.”

Procedural Teamed Up with ESRI and NVIDIA on 3D Cities in the Cloud

Procedural joins ESRI's Business Partner Program. Automatic creation and cloud-based visualization...

Procedural Inc. announces that it has joined the ESRI Business Partner Program as a Complementary Technology Provider. Participation in the program will create new opportunities for the two organizations to better serve customers with smart 3D city solutions based on GIS data and procedural modeling techniques.

The potential of the collaboration has been demonstrated in the Plenary Session at the 2010 ESRI User Conference in San Diego. Procedural and ESRI teamed up with NVIDIA to set up a pipeline for the creation, analysis and visualization of photorealistic 3D cities from 2D ArcGIS data. NVIDIA's RealityServer, which runs in GPU-based cloud computing environments, enables anyone to interact remotely with complex 3D cities on mobile devices such as netbooks, tablets or even the iPhone.

"Most municipalities around the globe use ArcGIS, and with CityEngine their existing 2D GIS data can be transformed into 3D representations. The combined power of ArcGIS and CityEngine will facilitate the advanced analysis, simulation and visualization of urban centers." says Pascal Mueller, CEO of Procedural Inc. "And after Rome Reborn, we collaborated again with the NVIDIA RealityServer team and are excited to show now an interactive photorealistic 3D visualization of Rotterdam running in a browser on a tablet."

Smart 3D Cities With New CityEngine 2010

Better user experience, more interactivity, simpler rule editing ... and new INDIE version...

Procedural Inc. today introduced CityEngine 2010, the latest version of its city creation software based on unique procedural techniques. The main novelties are interactive editing of dynamic city layouts, node-based rule authoring, and a sketching tool for facades. The software was awarded Killer Technology by the 3D World magazine and is used by companies such as Pixar, Dreamworks, Foster+Partners, Zaha Hadid, Rockstar North, Blizzard, Microsoft, IBM, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and municipalities all around the world.

"CityEngine 2010 lets you create smart 3D cities! They are intuitively to control, flexible to interactive manipulation and can be completely driven by GIS data." says Pascal Mueller, CEO of Procedural Inc. "Users from all industries benefit from smart 3D cities generated with CityEngine, ranging from Masdar City, the first zero energy city ever planned, to feature films by studios such as Pixar or Dreamworks. And due the new node-based rule editor, also users without scripting knowledge can now use the unlimited power of procedural modeling - without being restricted to pre-defined typologies or technical constraints."

New Key Features in CityEngine 2010:

Dynamic City Layouts (intuitive and interactive modification of urban structures on all levels)

Node-based Rule Editor (visual programming interface for procedural modeling beginners)

Facade Wizard (practical visual sketching tool for facades)

For the design of the impressive Arabic city Alamut during pre-production, CityEngine was applied for the quick ramp up of the digital set and to test the layout. Afterwards, in post-production, the final shots were conducted by {$styles.content.links.wrap}MPC using their own tools.

The movie is currently playing in theatres and we heavily recommend to go watch it - fantastic production design, entertaining story and breath-taking visual effects guaranteed.
