The CityEngine in Game Development

In game development, early ramp-up and quick iteration is highly important.

For the development of urban game environments, the CityEngine jumps this hurdle. The innovative procedural modeling tools of the CityEngine allow development teams to focus more on game-specific details by providing the following features:

  • Rule-based placement of prefabs for fast and smart asset creation. For example, architectural outdoor elements can be of higher level-of-detail on street-level than in upper stories.
  • Seamless integration via Collada into Autodesk's 3ds Max, Maya and Softimage. The CityEngine's Collada exporter supports instancing of architectural elements, making your files ready for your game engine.
  • Well-structured ready-to-parse XML output via Collada. Collada files can be read by all common 3D tools and furthermore, the XML can be easily parsed via scripting languages for customized pipeline integrations.
  • Parametric control of your polygon budgets. The rule-based generation of buildings allows for a convenient management of polygon count and fast re-generation of assets.
  • Procedural generation of colliders, occluders or levels-of-detail. Building rules can be written such that secondary representations are generated automatically - allowing for focus on quality enhancements and differentiating features instead of the cumbersome modeling of  invisible assets.

These and many more features are the reason why game development studios such as the following ones are already using the CityEngine:

Pipeline Integration

Due to the advanced Collada support and Python scripting capabilities of the CityEngine, it can be integrated in almost any game production pipeline. Check out the following pipeline examples to learn how urban environments generated with the CityEngine can be integrated in game engines:

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need help finding a solution for integrating the CityEngine into your production pipeline. And note that we provide, on request only, a time-limited full version to test its export capabilities.
